August is cycling’s dead month

After the highs of the Tour De France comes August’s procession of minor races and exhibition criteriums. It’s like a mid-season break before the Vuelta, Worlds and Lombardy.

So that made it the perfect excuse for a holiday. Two weeks in Italy, didn’t even throw my leg over a bike but did work hard on the gelateria. Call it “the Contador method” of building up your fitness.

Didn’t see many Italian cyclists until we were getting a taxi at 8am and saw loads out for a morning ride before the heat got up. So that’s when they go out then, not in the 35 degree heat of mid-afternoon.

Came back about 3kg heavier – claimed as excess baggage/water weight – which promptly disappeared after last night’s race. Bradley Wiggins eat your heart out.

Didn’t have the legs for the sprint but didn’t get dropped either and even had the energy to make a couple of decent digs, which came to naught due to the blasted headwind down the back straight again.

I’ve got loads of stuff to get through in my RSS reader including a quite emotional interview with Bradley Wiggins in the Guardian: Exhausted Bradley Wiggins now knows he can win the Tour de France which was flagged up by Tour De Ville.

And I’ve already signed up for my first Cyclocross race of the year which looks to be a bit different from the usual: The Rollapaluza Halloween Cyclo Cross

Mark Cavendish winning Stage 21

Here’s a short Youtube clip from yesterday’s stage 21 finish in Paris on Les Champs Elysees. We were in the press area up near the 100 metre board and I’ve never been so excited to be at a bike race.

Didn’t see the mistake by Garmin or “Big” George Hincapie derailing their effort to break the Columbia train along Rue Rivoli but Cavendish’s gap as they passed us was outrageous, at least ten metres and still growing.

Video never quite communicates just how fast they are travelling. It’s only when the team cars come screaming past that you realise how insanely fast the peloton is travelling.

They cruise at the same speed that plenty of people descend big hills, faster than my flat out sprinting in a Tuesday night crit race.

Will try and get my photos from the Tour D’Honneur up later today. Annoyingly we had to leave before Garmin, Saxo Bank, Liquigas and Astana did their lap but I did get a great shot of Lance on his Damien Hirst.

Trek Madone by Damien Hirst: bicycle as art

The bicycle is a piece of modern art. As a piece of design it’s unrivalled in the 20th Century for its purity of form.

Lance Armstrong has been riding a who bunch of beautifully decalled bikes through his comeback season. Putting aside all other sentiments, the Damien Hirst decorated one is among the most beautiful pieces of bike art I have ever seen.
